Biography
David Curry is one of the most versatile performers in Opera today, with a wide and varied repertoire that spans Opera, Operetta and Musical Theatre. Born in Canada and trained in London he has carved out a career that spans the globe.
This past season saw David in his Teatro Colón debut in Buenos Aries singing Kudryash in KATYA KABANOVA following that he sang Nanki-Poo in THE MIKADO for Michigan Opera Theatre (Detroit Opera), the title role in LES CONTES D’HOFFMAN for Den Nye Opera, in Bergen, Norway and Frederic in THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE in London at the Barbican Hall. This spring also saw David continue his long standing relationship with Théâtre du Châtelet Paris playing Pirelli in the French Premier and critically acclaimed production of Steven Sondheim’s SWEENEY TODD.
David has a long standing relationship and is renowned for performances at Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris , where his first principal role was Tony in the 50th Anniversary Production of WEST SIDE STORY, he followed that with the role of Arindal in Wagner’s rarely performed first opera, DIE FEEN with Mark Minkowski, and created the role of Stathis Borens in the world premiere of Howard Shore’s THE FLY, directed by David Cronenberg and conducted by Placido Domingo. Other productions include playing Henrik in the critically acclaimed French Premier of Steven Sondheims A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC also at Theatre du Chatelet co-starring with Leslie Caron, Greta Scacchi and Lambert Wilson. Other recent roles include Franz in Offenbachs DIE RHEINENIXEN in London at Cadogan Hall, Nanki-Poo in the 125th anniversary concert of THE MIKADO at London’s Royal Festival Hall. Tassilo in COUNTESS MARITZA in Toronto and Antonio in Thomas Ades THE TEMPEST at the Koncertgebow in Amsterdam with the original cast from the Royal Opera Covent Garden for Radio Netherlands.
David’s professional debut was at Wexford as Gervais in MANON LESCAUT and followed with appearances there as Don Fulgencio in MARIA DE CARMEN by Granados, Antinous in Fauré’s PENELOPE, Silvio in LE DOCTEUR MIRACLE and as Don José in the acclaimed production of Peter Brook’s LA TRAGÉDIE DU CARMEN, a role he later took on tour with the English Touring Opera, and the Lottery Agent in Weill’s DER SILBERSEE.
Other roles include Kudriash in KATYA KABANOVA and Don José in Carmen for Welsh National Opera, Marco in THE GONDOLIERS for English National Opera, Camille and Danilo in THE MERRY WIDOW, Gomatz in the Canadian premiere of Mozart’s ZAIDE, Paris in Offenbach’s LA BELLE HÉLÈNE in London’s West End and Hoffman in LES CONTES D’HOFFMANN at the Arcola Theatre in London. Early roles included Amtshauptmann in DIE GÄRTNERIN AUS LIEBE, Tom Rakewell in THE RAKE’S PROGRESS, the title role in Bizet’s LE DOCTEUR MIRACLE, and Lechmere in OWEN WINGRAVE.
Concert performances include works by Handel, Haydn and Mozart, Mendelssohn’s ELIJAH, Verdi’s REQUIEM, Dvorak’s STABAT MATER, Britten’s SERENADE, the world premiere of Delius’ MAUD and Finzi’s DIES NATALIS. He has performed 20th Century American and French repertoire for the Opéra Comique in Paris, Beethoven song at Teatro della Maestranza in Seville, and has sung “The Last Night of the Proms” for the BBC. He made his London recital debut in the Rosenblatt Recital Series at St. John’s, Smith Square, accompanied by Roger Vignoles.
David has also extensively performed many of the tenor roles of the Viennese and English Operetta, Gilbert and Sullivan, Lehar and Kalman. Productions include THE GONDOLIERS, HMS PINAFORE, THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE, THE SORCERER, RUDDIGORE, YEOMAN OF THE GUARD, THE MIKADO and THE MERRY WIDOW with Carl Rosa Opera in London’s West End, in the UK and around the world with performances totalling in the hundreds with stars such as Jo Brand, Victor Spinetti, Arthur Bostram, Rosie Ashe, Timothy West, Alistair McGowan and many others. In 2008 David sang the role of Fairfax in The YEOMAN OF THE GUARD at the Tower Festival at the Tower of London.
Trained at the Royal Academy of Music, London Royal Schools Opera, Royal College of Music and the National Opera Studio with scholarships from The Countess of Munster Musical Trust, The D’Oyly Carte Trust and the support of The Friends of the Royal Opera, Covent Garden.
Future plans include Peter Quint in Britten’s TURN OF THE SCREW in Paris, Lille and Reims.
