Tales of Hoffman - Bergen, Norway - Studvest.no
“I find myself standing at the twelfth chair at the 16th row in the wondrous Grieg hall.Gaping. Applauding - my green notepad and pink pen flop to the floor below me. I must applaud. I wonder - what have I been witness to? Greatness. Very few vacant seats which now houses the deafening wave of applause and wild whistles, the last few hours of my life has been filled with amazing vocal performance. In David Curry’s figure grabs the poet Hoffmann every guest's attention, in the local tavern a very humid night and provoked to share their crazy love stories. Through betrayal, longing, lust and romance the confused poet fully guides the audience through three amazing adventures where the meeting with the love again and again ends in despair, humiliation and deprivation.” ERIC LONNE

Premiere 19 February 2011. Also performed: 21, 23 and 25 February. Grieg Hall
In February 2011 Den Nye Opera presents a stunning production of the increasingly popular the Tales of Hoffmann, directed by the current head of the Opéra National de Paris, Nicolas Joel.
The Tales of Hoffmann is staged in a historical context, namely the moment when the opera was created, the end of the 1800s. This was the time when the Eiffel Tower demonstrated the limitless possibilities of steel as a material, and the world experienced a series of mechanical innovations, all of which is reflected in spectacular scenographic constructions of the production. The production is a collaboration with the Teatro Real in Madrid.
The Tales of Hoffmann, composed by Jacques Offenbach, premiered at the Opéra Comique in Paris in 1881. In the opera's poet himself, E.T.A. Hoffmann, is the center of the action. As the romantic artist he is, he split between the love of a woman, who appears in three different characters, and the obsession for art. Hoffmann tells his bitter love stories that are all about the woman he loves.
The main role of Hoffmann is sung by the Canadian tenor David Curry. Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra performs under conductor Marc Soustrot.
